Summer Patio

Spring 2019 was a wet one! Normally, I actually don’t mind wet weather, but it was definitely getting in the way of staining my backyard deck – which was preventing me from getting it patio ready for the summer!

However, once my deck was (FINALLY) stained and looking 10x better than it did before, I was super excited to turn it into a livable space that is an extension of our home.  With summer just around the corner, I was looking forward to spending A LOT of time outdoors with the kids.

First and foremost, I needed shelter.  Our backyard faces West and gets direct sun exposure.  The sun and heat in the early afternoons and into the evening, can be quite unbearable.  We decided on purchasing the Sojag Moreno gazebo from Costco.  And we just love it!  It’s great quality, comes in a variety of sizes, and bonus – mosquito netting is included!  However, for optimal shade I needed curtains on the West side of the gazebo, which I purchased directly from Sojag.

Once we had our gazebo installed, we were ready for furniture.  We once did have a beautiful Cast Aluminum 6 seat dining table and chairs from Canadian Tire that we brought over from our old home.  However, my husband was keen on having lounge furniture instead.

2 things to consider when buying patio furniture:

1) aluminum frame – NOT steel.  Steel will rust!

2) fabric – Sunbrella is great for the outdoors!

We chose the Allen + Roth Dartford 4 piece sectional set from Lowes. I LOVE sectionals! And I chose this set because the coffee table is height adjustable – it can go from coffee table height to dining height.  I had reservations about switching from dining furniture to a conversation set because we wouldn’t have the option to have a sit-down meal outside.  However, this set is versatile enough to allow for flexibility in how we use it.

Once I had the sectional set in place, it was time for accessories.  I was torn between netural (like the interior of my house) and vibrant colours.  However, I came to the conclusion that it’s summer, and it would be nice to have some pops of colour.  I came across this pillow cushion from The Hudson’s Bay Company, and instantly fell in love. I was also drawn to the fact that I could pull yellows, greens, whites, and navy blues into the space, and didn’t have to stick to one colour.

I think it turned out great, and hope you like it too!
